The Clausons
Ledge Hill Farm is 15 acres at the top of a hill in Readfield, Maine. We plant, shear, prune, and shape the trees ourselves. Every tree we sell is Maine grown, from our field or from other Maine tree farms. We started the farm in 2003 on 3rd generation family owned land. Now the 4th generation is working our fields.
In the off season we are out in the field keeping things tidy and growing for the upcoming season. Come November, we are at the barn on weekends, handing out saws, chatting with customers, running the balers, and pouring hot chocolate.
How the farm grew
Lots of work, but worth the wait.
2003 – The first rows Seedlings planted by hand on the slope below the house and barn.
2014 Trees stacked in the barn ready to be taken home.
2020 The rows filled in. Summer means mowing between them and shaping each tree. We replant hundreds of new trees every year!
Today Choose-and-cut, precut trees, a farm shop, workshops and a fire pit with a view.
Through the year
Most of what goes into a Christmas tree happens out of season.
Early spring
Spreading wood chips as the ground thaws.
Planting
Every seedling is planted by hand.
Summer
Mowing between the rows, all season long.
Harvest
Trees cut, baled and ready for the season.
The next crop
Fraser fir plugs, waiting for their turn in the field.
In the news
Local papers and New England travel writers have visited the farm over the years. This photo of Flo ran with the Kennebec Journal’s story in 2020.

Every tree at the farm was grown in Maine, either on our own land or on other Maine farms.
Wreaths, swags and greenery are made by Flo in our workshop from local fresh cut balsam.
No rush. Walk the farm, sit by the fire, and explore the farm shop. Stay as long as you like.
